가용성규산염은 실리카(SiO₂)와 알칼리금속(M₂O)이 다양한 몰비로 결합하고 있는 화합물로서, 가장 오래되고 친근한 무기질화합물 중의 하나이다. 일반적으로 구조 내에 일부 물을 함유하고 있어서 M₂O-nSiO₂-xH₂O의 분자식으로 표현된다. 물에 대한 용해성이 있기 때문에 ‘물유리’라고도 한다. 알칼리금속의 종류에 따라 규산나트륨, 규산칼륨, 리튬실리케이트가 있다. 규산나트륨 또는 규산칼륨은 규사(SiO₂)를 Na₂CO₃ 또는 K₂CO₃과 함께 1100~1200℃에서 용융시킴으로써 만들어진다. 이렇게 만들어진 유리는 고온고압에서 물에 녹아 “물유리”라고 알려진 투명하고 점성이 있는 액체가 된다.

Soluble silicates are compounds composed of silica (SiO₂) and an alkali metal (M₂O) in various molar ratios, and are among the oldest and most familiar inorganic compounds. They typically contain some water within their structure, giving them the molecular formula M₂O-nSiO₂-xH₂O. Because they are water-soluble, they are also called “water glass”. Depending on the type of alkali metal involved, there are sodium silicate (sodium silicate), potassium silicate (potassium silicate), and lithium silicate. Sodium silicate or potassium silicate is made by melting silica (SiO₂) with Na₂CO₃ or K₂CO₃ at 1100–1200°C. This glass dissolves in water at high temperature and high pressure to form a transparent and viscous liquid known as “water glass”.
